Software Engineer Intern
About the role
You'll be working with our retail customers, and you'll be responsible for keeping thousands of devices in sync in a market that moves every fifteen minutes.
The tech we use, which you can already know or pick up on the way: Kafka, MQTT, Redis, Influx, Grafana, Kubernetes, domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, CQRS, infrastructure as code / GitOps.
No legacy, no accumulated debt, nothing anyone is afraid to touch. We refactor constantly, and we lean on AI heavily to do it. That's how a team this small runs this much infrastructure.
What you'd actually be doing
- Shipping features and fixing bugs in the app people use every day
- Debugging live issues, sometimes straight from a customer's question
- Improving the architecture: optimization, scaling, making things not fall over at 3am
- Helping us find the next good engineer: spotting talent, representing Volton, sitting in on interviews
This is not an exhaustive list of tasks. We are looking for people who are naturally curious. Depending on what you are good at you can choose your own field and responsibilities.
About Volton
We pay ordinary people for the heat pump or AC already sitting in their home, by using it to help balance the electricity grid. We own the whole stack (device, software, electricity, market access) with no middlemen in between. 80+ MW under our control, spread across 5,000+ devices, about 5% of everything Estonia draws at peak. €1.5M paid back to customers so far.
The team's average age is in the early twenties. Nobody here is waiting for permission, and there's no bureaucracy to fight through.
About you
- You write code you're proud of, and you've got something to show us: a project, a repo, coursework, anything
- Studying a related field, or self-taught and able to prove it
- Comfortable with the tech stack: React Native, TypeScript, Go
- Speak Estonian and English
This probably isn't for you if
- You aren't invested in the product. You need to find features before they arrive.
- You need clear directions before you start. Most of what we build hasn't been built before.
- You'd rather not use AI to write code. We lean on it heavily, and you'd be fighting how the whole team works.
- You can't stand shipping something imperfect and fixing it next week.
- You want structure. There isn't much here. No approval chains, no committees, no forms.
What you get
- A paid role at the end. The trial period itself is unpaid, and it ends early if we see enough before then.
- Start at 9am or 9pm, we don't mind. We care what you ship, not when you're at a desk.
- Office at Golden Gate (Ahtri tn 6)
- Free snacks, drinks, entertainment etc.
Requirements
Based in Tallinn, in the office. Must speak Estonian and English, and have the right to work in Estonia. Visa sponsorship and relocation not available.
