About the role

You'd help decide when and at what price Volton buys and sells electricity. Electricity is a uniquely difficult market. Supply and demand must balance continuously, forecasts are always changing, transmission between countries is limited, and decisions have to be made before all the information is available. Prices are shaped by economics, human behaviour, weather, and the physics of the power grid.

Your job would be to understand those moving parts and turn that understanding into better trading decisions. Some days that means analysing why prices moved. Some days it means improving a forecast, building a tool, or automating a repeated decision. Other days it means taking a position with real money on the line and learning from what happened.

You don't need previous experience in electricity markets. We're looking for someone with the ability and motivation to become very good at them.

About Volton

Volton is an Estonian energy company combining electricity supply, trading, software, and direct control of distributed energy assets. We currently control more than 80 MW across 5,000+ devices and have paid over €1.5 million back to customers.

We buy and sell electricity on European power markets and help balance the electricity grid. Because we own the whole stack - devices, software, electricity supply, and market access - we can turn ideas into real decisions without going through layers of middlemen.

We're a small, young team. There are few approval chains, ideas move quickly, and responsibility comes earlier than it would in a traditional energy company. We use AI extensively to research, build, analyse, and automate.

What you'd actually be doing

  • Investigating what moves electricity prices and forming your own view of the market
  • Monitoring our market positions and understanding where our forecasts differ from reality
  • Working with weather, consumption, generation, price, and power-grid data
  • Learning how power plants, renewable generation, transmission constraints, congestion, and market participants interact
  • Building models, dashboards, alerts, and trading tools
  • Reviewing results and distinguishing a good decision from a lucky outcome
  • Finding opportunities and risks our current systems do not yet capture

The developers and energy specialists around you will provide support, but we expect you to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and gradually shape how we trade.

About you

  • You're comfortable with numbers, logic, and uncertain information
  • You're interested in code and data; experience with Python or something similar is useful
  • You want to understand how things work rather than blindly trust a model
  • You can form an opinion, explain your reasoning, and change your mind when the evidence changes
  • You stay calm when a decision goes badly and investigate what can be learned from it
  • You speak Estonian and English

Previous trading or energy experience is not strictly required. A personal project, market analysis, forecasting model, programming portfolio, trading experience, or simply a convincing demonstration of how you think may matter more than your degree or previous job title.

What you get

  • A paid role at the end. The trial period itself is unpaid, and it ends early if we see enough before then
  • Start at 9am or 9pm, we don't mind. We care what you ship, not when you're at a desk
  • Office at Golden Gate (Ahtri tn 6)
  • Free snacks, drinks, entertainment etc.

Requirements

Based in Tallinn, in the office. Must speak Estonian and English, and have the right to work in Estonia. Visa sponsorship and relocation not available.
